Career Description

The Direct Support Professional I position assists people who have Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Under supervision of the Residential Coordinator, the DSP I will be responsible for providing direct care and support to the people living in their home, licensed or unlicensed. DSPs provide support to people to learn skills that ultimately enable them to with less supervision and become active members of their community. DSPs maintain peoples safety and well-being in accordance with Volunteers of America Chesapeakes policies and procedures, and relevant regulations. DSPs support and communicate with people using a person-centered approach.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Min of a high school diploma, GED, and/or IEP
  • (1) yrs. of exp. working in the field of intellectual/developmental. Exceptions may be made for less than 1-year experience to include enhanced supervision of the DSP by the Qualified Professional until the year is obtained.
  • Medication Administration Certification is preferred, but may be required by the end of the introductory period.
  • Must pass All state required trainings and new hire orientation classes. Must maintain current certifications and trainings required by CMS or relevant governmental entities.
  • Computer Skill required for documentation.
  • Written and verbal communication skills must be clear and professional.
  • Problem Solving abilities.
  • Pass relevant local and state background checks and drug testing requirements
  • Bilingual in any language a plus

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides necessary supports as identified by the Person-Centered Planning Team. Communicates and coordinates with families, members of the Person-Centered Planning Team, day program, and other providers of services and supports as necessary and appropriate.
  • Teaches, supports and performs household tasks such as cleaning, preparing meals, planning household budgets, food shopping, etc.
  • Assists, identifies, and meets the needs of people to develop daily living skills. This includes following their Person-Centered Plan consistently.
  • DSPs may monitor people to ensure medication is taken as prescribed. May assist people to learn how to take medication independently. May assist with medication administration.
  • May perform crisis intervention; may provide emergency First Aid or CPR and other types of assistance.
  • May plan, coordinate, and participate with people in their social activities.
  • Participates in assessment activities and on the Person-Centered Planning Team as appropriate.
  • Transports people and/or provides mobility training to assist people to go to appointments, grocery shopping, etc.
  • Communicates and documents activities and behaviors of people in log book, EHR and client files as appropriate.
  • May prepare food according to a developed menu, which reflects peoples preferences and may include a prescribed diet (low sodium, pureed, low fat, etc.) May teach and support people to make health choices when shopping or dining out.
  • Attends staff meetings, and trainings as required by the program. Ensures program compliance with Volunteers of America Chesapeakes Policies, procedures and established protocols.
  • May inspect the home and report repairs and maintenance needs. Ensures fire and other safety procedures area carried out as directed. Checks for proper sanitation and security conditions within the home.
  • May monitor activities of visitors to the home.
  • Has up-to-date knowledge of Volunteers of America Chesapeakes policies and procedures.
  • documents all services in the electronic case management system daily.
  • Works cooperatively and respectfully with the entire support team.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • To ensure needs of the person are met and client satisfaction is achieved through implementation of the PCP.
  • To ensure that the program is operated in compliance with the Scope of Work, Volunteers of America Chesapeakes policies and procedures, licensing, government regulations, and Medicaid waiver regulations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle to transport oneself, consumers, and program supplies as necessary.
  • The physical ability to travel to assigned locations, stand, stoop, bend, reach, pull, push, lift, grasp, climb, talk, see, hear and perform basic and light home maintenance activities, and operate office equipment.
  • Operating office equipment requiring continuous or repetitive hand/arm movements.
  • The ability to remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time

Requirements

Minimum of a high school diploma or GED and one (1) year of experience in a residential program for individuals with intellectual disabilities; or a Bachelor’s degree in a human services field. Experience in a residential setting with other types of special needs populations may be considered (i.e. cerebral palsy, Autism, Alzheimer’s, Traumatic Brain Injury, mental health). Must have reliable transportation to transport clients, if needed. Must maintain vehicle insurance at all times.

Medication Administration Certification in the State of Virginia is a plus.

Preferred selection may be given to persons who have:

  • Experience in a residential setting serving people with intellectual/developmental disabilities or with other types of special needs populations (rehabilitation settings, nursing homes, psychiatric hospitals, other behavioral health settings, etc.); 
  • Experience in working with people who are medically fragile and/or have physical limitations;
  • Experience in working with Evans Class Monitors, Quality Trust, HRLA, PCR, DDS, DDA in the District of Columbia; and/or
  • A current Trained Medication Employee (TME) license for positions in Waiver and Residential Habilitation environments.

*Note:  All employees must maintain all on-going training, certifications, and be otherwise compliant and in good standing with all program requirements as a condition of continued employment.

PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:

  • Provides support for people as necessary to ensure needs as identified by the Inter-Disciplinary Team (IDT) are met.
  • Communicates with families, members of the IDT, the person’s day program and other providers of services and supports as necessary and appropriate.
  • Instructs, supports and participates in performing household tasks with people such as cleaning, preparing meals, food shopping, etc. as identified in the ISP.
  • Assists people in developing daily living skills by identifying and meeting social, environmental and health care needs.
  • Assists people in their daily grooming and personal care routines.
  • Implements Non-Violent Crisis Prevention Intervention responses as trained and specified in the person’s Behavior Support Plan and ISP. 
  • Responds, as trained and instructed in emergency medical situations.
  • Performs crisis intervention as trained and provides assistance as needed.
  • Actively plans, coordinates and participates with people in social activities including frequent community outings.
  • Participates in assessment processes and serves on the IDT as appropriate.
  • Transports people and/or provides mobility training to assist people to go on appointments, community rehabilitation programs, grocery shopping, etc.
  • Documents activities and behaviors of people in files as designated, on data sheets, in log books, and various other forms as required.  (This may also include the use of electronic records.)
  • Prepares food according to developed menus, menu protocols, peoples’ likes and dislikes and prescribed diet.
  • Attends staff meetings, training in-services, house and program meetings as directed.
  • Ensures compliance with VOAC program requirements, environment-specific rules as well as those regulations from all monitoring entities.
  • Inspects the home/program environments and reports repairs and maintenance as needed.
  • Ensures fire and other safety procedures are carried out as directed -- including participation in routine fire drills and emergency drills.
  • Checks for proper sanitation and security conditions within the home/program environment.
  • Notifies supervisor and monitors activities of visitors to the home/program environment.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of VOAC policies and procedures.
  • Understands role as a mandated reporter of suspected abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
